The 71st year of Independence definitely calls for celebration. We have reached a stage when we can look back with some equanimity and examine our mistakes and appreciate our achievements.

All of us know that Independence day speeches are important. But can they replace the real circumstances that surround us today?

Parliament sessions are now farcical, ordinances seem to be the order of the day, children die in neglected government hospitals and make overs are made when Chief Ministers visit, blame games are everywhere, Kashmir is witnessing more violence than ever, relations with China are at an all-time low and elections are converted into who can buy who.

Actions speak louder than words

Speeches now rhyme but no reason. The Prime Minister’s speech is full of how things should be and as usual filled with witticisms. In Kerala an issue is made out of a non-issue. There are clear guidelines about who can hoist the National flag on Independence day.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat today unfurled the national flag at a government-aided school in Kerala’s Palakkad district despite being told by authorities that political personalities were not permitted do this.

The Sangh Parivar chief and ideological mentor of our PM was initially restrained from hoisting the tricolour by the Palakkad District Collector, who issued a memo saying, “Since the school is supported by the state, it is inappropriate for a political leader to hoist national flag in an aided school.
