Assembly elections in Goa threw up a hung parliament , with the Congress and BJP getting 17 and 13 seats respectively, in the 40 member assembly. The independent candidates who won 9 seats are now the deciding factor for getting a majority and talks/horse trading has begun in earnest. The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), the Goa Forward Party (GFP) won three seats each and whom they decide to support will play a key role in government formation.

Meanwhile the Bharatiya Janata Party in Goa passed a resolution calling for Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar to be named their chief ministerial candidate on Sunday even as the Congress has been simultaneously talking with the ‘kingmakers.’ The Parrikar factor is a unifying factor for the BJP, as Parrikar led the party to victory in the 2012 assembly election,is a popular local leader and Goa unit wants him to return to Goa as the chief minister.

Goa election results 2017 has been:

Party Won Total
Indian National Congress 17 17
Nationalist Congress Party 1 1
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak party 3 3
Goa Forward Party 3 3

As things are moving fast, we may soon see Manohar Parrikar as the BJP Chief Minister of Goa, unless the Congress party moves faster which is unlikely. The things that go on in the name of ‘elections.’
