The steel flyover planned by the ruling Congress government in Bengaluru city and opposed tooth and nail by people in the “garden-city” as it meant felling of nearly a thousand trees is finally called off.

More power to the people

The construction of the 6.7 km long, six-lane flyover from Basaveshwara circle to Hebbal junction in Bengaluru city would have cost Rs 1.791 crores to the exchequer but more importantly the green cover would be permanently lost. The garden city witnessed the largest people protests against the steel flyover.

Accusations of corruption

The decision was announced in the background of accusations of corruption by the opposition BJP. The contents of a diary which was allegedly maintained by Congress MLC K. Govindaraj, were “leaked” to the media which had details of the kickbacks. The BJP claimed the entries in the diary pointed to kickbacks of ₹65 crores not only to the Congress high command but also Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s family.
