The new Trump era is setting a dangerous trend in its relation to media. The new era is all about – Write well about us or you will no longer be invited to cover events regarding our government. If you write about us, let it be positive, otherwise it is all fake news and you are the enemy of the American people.

Who is the real enemy?

This trend was more blatantly displayed when the new President barred several news organisations, including The New York Times, CNN and BBC, The Guardian from attending an informal press briefing(called a gaggle, which was off-camera) with Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary on Saturday.

Only some reporters were handpicked and the exclusion also resulted in the Time Magazine and Associated Press to boycott the briefing despite getting a clearance, while The Wall Street Journal vowed to abstain from similar restricted briefings in the future.

The channels which were invited to cover the press meet were The Washington Times, One America News Network and Breitbart News (whose former executive chairman, Steve Bannon, is Trump’s chief strategist). All of them are known for their conservative coverage.

First time in the history of White House-Media houses criticise move

This is the first time that the White House has barred popular and credentialed news organisations from attending a press briefing . CNN had this reply to the new Trump move –“This White House does not value an independent press. There is a word for that: Un-American.”

Intolerance for criticism seems to be the new order of the day for elected representatives.
