What is the AIMIM doing in U.P elections? As a party, AIMIM and its chief Asaduddin Owaisi has absolutely no chance in the Uttar Pradesh elections. But they succeed in a more subtle way- that is it divides the Muslim votes. Wherever, Muslims are a sizeable population they vote against the BJP. In UP where the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya and the promise of building Ram temple in the disputed site still remains the major factor in the state.

May help BJP win by default

Today the Muslim community in UP is as wary of BJP as ever. The Muzaffarnagar riots are still fresh in memory and the main culprits are local BJP leaders like Sangeet Som and Suresh Rana. They are tilted towards the SP-Congress alliance. The community favours Akhilesh Yadav as a CM, who is capable of inclusive development. They are impressed by his work. Inspite of the fact that Mayawati is fielding many Muslim candidates for BSP, the Muslims here are suspicious of Mayawati — she may ally with the BJP, as she had done twice before.

By fielding the local Muslim leaders the MIM can achieve only one purpose- that is In the 73 seats in western U.P. which have elections today , the BJP hopes to benefit from this split — the party has not fielded a single Muslim.
